As the semester comes to a close, students will be leaving their residence halls, houses, and apartments for a few weeks to make an extended visit home. It’s crucial for students to secure their residence and belongings before leaving campus or the Bryan-College Station area. Below are a few compiled tips to ensure a safe and secure winter break:
- Take valuable items (laptops, televisions, etc.) home with you or secure them in a safe, hidden location.
- Write down or take pictures of valuable items’ serial numbers in case of theft.
- Close and lock all windows and doors.
- Unplug all electrical devices.
- Take out all trash and dispose of any perishable food items.
- Store and secure any items that are usually kept outside.
- Discuss plans for winter break with roommate(s) and determine who is responsible for any tasks that must be completed before leaving.
A few extra tips for students living off campus:
- If your student desires to have mail forwarded while out of town, they should fill out a change of address card or contact the post office to have them hold mail, which can be done for up to 30 days.
- Notify apartment manager of planned absence during winter break.
- For security purposes, put lights on a timer while gone and alternate them to mimic actual use.
- Report any suspicious activity to your police department. If you see something, say something!
